personality vs character：「個性」與「性格」，怎樣區分？- 白話英語202136

有朋友問：

personality，個性，character，性格，這兩個說法，中文我都分不清楚，更何況英文呢？幫我解釋一下？

看到這個問題，我先是被這位朋友的坦誠和自知之明逗樂了，然後，我發現自己好像也是這樣，並沒能分清什麼叫個性、什麼叫性格……

我們先看中文。「個性」，「性格」，如果就是單獨看這兩個詞，是不容易分辨的，只有放到具體的語言環境中去，才能說清楚。比方說，他這個人，「有個性」，這是說此人特立獨行，與眾不同，這是一種總體評價；他這個人，「就那種個性」，這時的「個性」跟「性格」基本上一致。至於哲學意義上的「個性」，那是跟「共性」相對的，與我們的討論關係不大。

性格呢，就不一樣了：他這個人，性格孤僻：這是一種行為習慣，他一向不怎麼與人往來。

英語裡的personality，翻譯為「個性」，其實跟漢語裡這個詞是有不同之處的，雖然也的確有重合的地方。《葛傳槼英語慣用法詞典》是這樣解釋的：

personality在一般詞典里注作「人格」，其實跟「人格高尚」、「人格卑鄙」等表達方式里的「人格」不同。personality通常有四個意思：

（1）「身份為何」（personal identity），如His personality has not yet been determined。（還不曾查出他是誰。）

（2）「性格與外在」（distinctive personal character，但也兼指外表），如He has a charming personality。

（3）「個體特性」（individuality，與「共性」相對，是抽象名詞），如Personality is of as much importance as ability。

（4）「動人」（magnetic personal quality，是抽象名詞——即「吸引力」，太白注），如He is a man with personality和She has personality。

對於character，《葛傳槼英語慣用法詞典》是這麼說的：

character和characteristic意思不同。character是「性格」，characteristic是「性格里的特質」。一個人只有一個character，卻有多個characteristics，這多個characteristics合成一個character。

事實上，personality和character這兩個詞的來源有所不同，了解一下，有助於我們更深刻、更細緻地領會其區別。

personality，看上去是來自於personal，其實是來自persona，最初的意思是actor's mask，演員的面具。演員嘛，總體來說都還是比較有吸引力的，所以personality在很大程度上，主要與「吸引力」掛鈎。

character則不同，最初它是給馬打上烙印的那種工具，a stamping tool。也即，character主要是一個人區別於他人的獨特行為習慣。

最後，我們來看看英語語義學泰斗S. I. Hayakawa（早川一會）在他的名著《Use the Right Word》中是怎麼說的：

These words refer to a person’s mental make-up or emotional state.

Character and personality both point to aggregations of mental and emotional traits, innate and learnt, that distinguish one person from another.

Character points to the fully developed life-style of an adult or group and often relates to moral fibre: drinking companions of questionable character; the stern but resourceful character of the Pilgrim Fathers.

Personality pertains more to the whole indefinable emotional colouration that a specific person gives off: the young girls』 winsome personality; a personality crippled by arrogance and impatience.

Used without qualification, character suggests moral forcefulness, personality emotional appeal: He has character but no personality. In this use, the word can apply to anything thought to exhibit these qualities, especially when they are distinctive in their force or appeal: a face with character; paintings completely lacking in character; a striking city, full of personality.

The latter word, used in this way, has become so popular that it is in danger of sounding trite through over-use.

翻譯一下：

這兩個詞指的都是一個人的精神、情緒、情感狀況。

Character和personality指的都是是一個人區別於他人的精神、情感、情緒方面特徵的集合，不管這些特徵是與生俱來的，還是後天養成的。Character指的是一個或一群成年人已充分形成的生活方式，經常帶有道德方面的特質：

drinking companions of questionable character，性格不靠譜的酒友；

the stern but resourceful character of the Pilgrim Fathers. 朝聖先民們那種嚴酷但足智多謀的性格。

Personality更多地是指一個人所散發出的難以定義的那種情感、情緒的色彩：

the young girls』 winsome personality，年輕女孩們那種楚楚動人的風采；

a personality crippled by arrogance and impatience. 遭到高傲與不耐煩破壞的一種個性。

在沒有修飾詞的情況下，character暗指道德上的有力，personality暗示的是情感上的吸引力：He has character but no personality. 他性格正直，但缺乏吸引力。

在這種用法中，該詞適用於被認為能夠表現出這些特質的任何事物，尤其是這些事物特性突出，能表現出其有力、有吸引力的一面的時候：

a face with character，有性格的臉；

paintings completely lacking in character，完全缺乏性格的畫作；

a striking city, full of personality. 令人印象深刻的城市，充滿了吸引力。

後一個詞在這種用法中已經用得如此普遍，以至於有過度使用從而聽起來有點陳詞濫調的危險。
